♥, spelled <3, and pronouced "heart" or "less than three", is the universal symbol for love. You may have noticed that ♥ looks nothing like a heart, human or otherwise.
Common usage
♥ is the beloved character of choice for emos, scenesters, Japanophiles and all internetters. The ♥ appears primarily on Facebook, which translates <3 to ♥ automatically.
"Less than three" is the pronunciation of the graphical representation stated as <3. Breaking a heart looks like </3, putting a slash through it or "closing" the heart tag.
