Summary
300 is a film depicting a fictionalized battle between 300 Spartans and approximately 100,000 Persians.
The film launched the THIS IS SPARTAAAA! meme, and it also was featured in many existing memes.
Origins
The movie is based on the seminal 1998 Frank Miller comic of the same name, and is directed with characteristic subtlety by 'visionary' director, Zach Snyder. The movie's ludicrously overblown and cartoonish tone is ripe for parody, and goes a long way to explaining the meme's longevity.
Loosely set during the events of the three day Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, the movie is basically King Leonidas shouting at a bunch of half-naked, oiled up guys with rippling torsos glowering longingly at each other, sporadically interrupted by slow-motion battle scenes.
The unintentional homoerotic subtext is so apparent that you wouldn't bat an eyelid if it turned into a musical halfway through and finished with a spectacular dance-off against the Persians.
