7chan was one of the most popular imageboards that weren't 4chan, and is now an underpopulated alternative to 4chan.

Summary
7chan is an alternative to 4chan, another imageboard with anonymous posting and a casual atmosphere, but currently separates itself from Anonymous because they think it's gotten incredibly stupid, and close themselves off from the rest of the chans. There are about the same number of boards as 4chan, plus a Minecraft server, a web TV channel, an IRC (currently the most active thing about it)
Origins
Symbion started 7chan in 2005, with only an "under construction" page, and stayed like this well into 2006. 7chan languished in obscurity until the events of /b/day, when 4chan's /b/ hit the peak of lawlessness and moot decided to finally do something about it. A couple of users started declaring that Anonymous was independent of /b/ and 4chan and fled to 7chan, which then became the internet's newest Mos Eisley, a hive of scum and villainy, and became the second biggest imageboard on the web. Raiding other sites was encouraged, insulting other posters was (and still is) the norm and in general, everything that moot banned on /b/ made its way over to 7chan.
Because they hated everything 4chan had become and many of the stupider users on /b/ took a word against 4chan as a word against themselves, and because 7chan was once full of active trolls ready to raid a board or site at a minute's notice, the two sites have been engaged in a long-running rivalry of spamming each other's sites and occasionally DDoSing them, which continued until 7chan generally fizzed out.
7chan has been one of the most infamous imageboards, for one thing because they featured a /cake/ board dedicated to nothing but lolicon hentai and got involved in their own share of constant, unending trolling drama until they collectively pulled the plug on being Anonymous.
Current status
With their vocal distaste not just for Anonymous and the rest of the chans, but also those who come barging in with no knowledge of chan culture and Internet Culture at large, 7chan is one of the more underpopulated chans out there, consisting of mostly lurkers and minecraft players. It's the most prominent chan to use kusaba software. People unfamiliar with chans in general treat 7chan as a back-up of 4chan, and there's nothing they hate more than that.
7chan is badly in need of donations and is laxing the rules on posting on /b/ in an attempt to encourage more posters.

- When 7chan experiences a massive influx of 4chan users, they turn on partyhard.css on /b/, which forces seizure-inducing rainbows on every part of the board, and often spinning genitals dropping from the top of the screen to an electronic dance soundtrack.
