Summary
September 11, 2001 was an event that shocked the United States and the world. This naturally caused an outpouring of compassion, grief, anger, empathy, and patriotism. The internet served as one place where these feelings could be expressed, leading to many online tributes. However, some tributes were better than others...
Current status
The event is history. The sites at Lower Manhattan, the Pentagon, and rural Pennsylvania were cleaned up and memorialized, but the internet is still littered with images. The internet is also littered with mockery of 9/11 such as the well known and over-spouted "Jews did 9/11" meme, which you may still see occasional usage of on IRC.
