Summary
AOL Instant Messenger or AIM is AOL's instant messenger service. Currently it is the most popular instant messaging service in the United States.
While many more sophisticated computer users disdained AOL ISP services, they happily used AOL instant messenger to communicate with their friends or foes.
Origins
AIM was built into versions of AOL; AOL employees got the service in March 1995, and users of the AOL ISP got it in March 1996. Beginning in 1997, standalone versions were released for various operating systems.
