Summary
AltaVista is a search engine on its last legs. Formerly one of the most popular search engines on the internet, it was crushed by the iron will of Google and forgotten about many moons ago. Word has it that it'll be thrown on the scrapheap sooner rather than later.
Origins
AltaVista was founded in 1995 as the result of Digital Equipment Corporation's attempt to develop services for finding files on public networks easily. It was quite innovative for a contemporary search engine, boasting features which were unheard of at the time.
Current status
On life support. Yahoo! has announced that it will be closing down AltaVista this year.
