Summary
A talking rabbit (yes, this really did start from a console game) tries to help you pilot your ship. Meanwhile, back at the ranch: 4chan, Google, and the meme-ing masses take an arguably good thing and run it straight into the ground-- direct bullseye, no course deviations, and thousands upon thousands of barrel roll iterations.
Origins
On April 27th, 1997, Star Fox 64 was released on the Nintendo 64 gaming console. Star Fox 64 is a scrolling shooter where the player controls jets to fight and destroy the enemies. The characters of this game are anthropomorphic animals, containing various types of characters from frogs to dogs. One character in particular, a rabbit named Peppy, constantly tells the main character, Fox McCloud, that he needs to do a barrel roll.
Current status
Almost a decade has passed since the first YTMND pages making fun of the "Barrel Roll" comment from Star Fox 64 went viral. For a couple of those years, the joke was excessively popular. In recent years, however, it's blessedly rare that one comes across this meme in the wild. It has for the most part faded, thankfully, into a fleeting chortled memory for most of the internet. Amen.
Facts
- He says this quote in the first stage on Corneria, after the city on a point with multiple lasers.
