Summary
The Blue screen of death is the name given to the screen that comes up when Windows experiences a fatal error, requiring a restart.
Origins
OS/2 developers jokingly called it this referring both to the color of the error screen and the nickname of IBM, "Big Blue".
Current status
With the arrival of Windows 7, it's less common to see BSoD's on home PCs, but ATMs, gas pumps, and arcade games still display them with frightening regularity.
