A bot is a program which performs repetitive tasks so a human doesn't have to.
Bots can be used in many contexts, including on IRC, wikis, etc.
Some bots spam unwanted content on comment sections of blogs, which is why people introduced captchas to stop them. Other bots crawl the internet to collect e-mail addresses, so users are cautioned not to put e-mail addresses verbatim on public posts and instead have to disguise them so bots don't pick them up to add them to spam lists.
IRC bots are known for serving warez and performing other crucial tasks.
