Summary
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person shooter video game. You go through the roles as an Army Ranger, a C.I.A operative, a British S.A.S guy, all with interweaving stories that make everything twisty and turny. Picking up where Modern Warfare left off, the Ultranationalists seize control of Russia and begin a campaign against the West by committing acts of terrorism over the course of five years. Ruskies invade America, and it's Red Dawn allover again.
BUT HOLY CRAP, THERE ARE GUNS. A BUTTLOAD OF GUNS. Thanks to the huge armament of weaponry on Modern Warfare 2, there is now an inordinate amount of mind-numbingly stupid videos hosted on YouTube featuring these firearms. The COOLEST thing one can do is record in-game footage of one's in-game character shooting a VIRTUAL MACHINE GUN. After all, show casing your video game character dual-wielding shotguns makes YOU one tough hombre.
It's common knowledge that once you've played through Modern Warfare 2, you are a fully qualified war and weapons expert, ready to give logistics and weapons maintenance advice to even the most grizzled of Army Green Berets. IRL military is NOTHING compared to the horrors of Modern Warfare 2 on the Nightmare difficulty setting.
Epic flame wars erupt on forums and YouTube videos between COD War Experts, lasting days at a time. These can be sparked easily by saying one type of weapon is better than another, and massive lulz ensue when death threats are quickly issued. Boards such as /k/ are rife with these activities.
Origins
The Call of Duty franchise has been active since 2003. The games have covered World War 2, modern times, and the latest installment takes place during the 1960's during the Cold War.
Current status
Once Call of Duty: Black Ops was released, people ceased caring about Modern Warfare 2. Downloadable content is still available, and updates are occasional.
