Summary

In the comic, a character presents something, usually of value, to another character. The character crushes the object, followed by a zoom-in of his face.

Origins

Obligatory exploitable version.

The Card Crusher is Professor Himonya, a linguistics professor at University of Tokyo. During an interview on Japanese television, the man pulled out a business card and asked the interviewer to take it and pretend that it was her own. When she presented Himonya the card, he took it in his hand and crushed it with a priceless reaction. His face was immortalized in an oh exploitable comic, which first became popular on 4chan's /a/.

This was a big deal in Japan because of how stiff Japanese manners are. In Japan, presenting a business card is a really traditional practice – it symbolizes forming an unbreakable bond of respect and unity between the two businessmen, blessing their commercial union for generations to come. When Himonya crushed the card, it was like kidnapping the interviewer's babies and then shooting her from a Japanese perspective. The Japanese furor over the desecration of a holy business contract is how /a/ became aware of Card Crushing.

Current status

Old but not forgotten.
