Summary

As long as man has been lonely, the cat has been keeping humans as their pets. It follows that the internet would take a liking to these ornamental, four legged fuzzy creatures. There are those that claim that the internet's love of cats stems from the comparison of the cat to the average internet user: furry, lazy, antisocial, self-centered, and easily frightened IRL. As such, the cat is the official animal of the internet.

Felines are earliest seen in the Miocene Epoch, 5-20 million years ago. They have long had a distinct relationship with human beings. The Egyptians worshiped cats and held them in high order over 2,000 years ago, associating them with the goddess Bastet, officially making the Egyptians the inventors of the cat MEME, along with their other less notable achievements. With the dissolution of the Egyptian empire in its classical state, and subsequent decline of the Roman Empire, the cat meme remained mostly dormant and practiced by a few scattered people throughout the following years.

During the Dark Ages, house cats were killed due to their perceived association with witchcraft, evil, and paganism. People eventually realized cats were great at catching rodents (like plague-resistant ones spreading the Black Death through fleas). Thankfully, the Enlightenment and Modernity arrived just in time, and cats were rightfully revived in full in the throes of the internet collective.

Current status

Cat memes are durable and date back to 1979, when a cat was placed upon a high voltage wire, and a photograph taken of it, captioned: "Hang in there!" This later spawned an internet tradition of placing captions on cats smiling, bicycling, and many other adorable activities. A long standing tradition holds that the day we currently call Saturday is being phased out in favor of Caturday. Caturday is so sacred that many people have the day off so they can post cats.
