China

This is China! The Middle Kingdom, which has its own parallel internet universe and delectable collection of memes.

Summary

You know about China. Great food, ancient history, authoritarian government, the martial arts movies, and being the sweatshop of the world too. And don't forget the pirated video and computer games (along with other pirated things). But have you heard of its parallel internet universe?

Perhaps you know about the Great Firewall, blocking websites left and right. That means no YouTube, no Wikipedia, no many other foreign websites. So the Chinese instead have their own websites.. like Sina, Baidu, Sohu, Tudou, Youku, Renren, Kaixin001, and Hudong (BTW, Google is allowed, but its presence is far below Baidu's). All get supervision from the Communist Party, because the Commies (who aren't really Commie.. they are as capitalist as Uncle Sam now) don't want to lose power.

Also if you go on internet forums and post content a little too out of line, you will find a "Big Mama" cleaning up after you. Also if you go on Chinese municipal websites, you will find "internet police" cartoon characters reminding you that the internet is censored and watched.

China has no shortage of internet memes. Particularly the Baidu 10 Mythical Creatures (including the beloved Grass Mud Horse), Jia Junpeng, Little Fatty, the Lonely Brother, and the Back Dorm Boys are well known on the mainland. The Hong Kong Bus Uncle comes from the special territory of Hong Kong.

Origins

From way, way back

Current status

Still up, Communists still in charge, firewall still in place. 13,000,000,000,000 dollars richer than the states, well on it's way in replacing the US (to the dismay of fatards everywhere in the states). Iran and other nations with a grudge for Uncle Sam like this future
