Summary
An attempt to usurp Wikipedia's throne as the world's biggest repository for information which nobody really cares about, Citizendium is a wiki which aims at factual accuracy provided by individuals who are experts in their fields while average people are provided with toy editing privileges to appease the masses.
Citizendium's two-tiered system consisting of experts (provided with admin privileges) and regular people may seem effective on paper, but many prospective writers for the site find it highly prohibitive due to the patterns of elitism and article ownership many of the experts tend to fall into. As a result the site is generally considered to be a failure.
Origins
Citizendium was founded in 2007 by Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, as a direct competitor to Wikipedia after he became disillusioned and distanced himself from Wikipedia in the early 00s.
Current status
Dying a slow, agonizing death as a result of its shortcomings. Larry is still continuing to deny this, even though Citizendium only gets about twenty edits a day and many articles on important topics consist solely of one line of text.
