- Release Date: 01/1997
Clippy (named Clippit before being given the nickname Clippy) was that annoying paperclip virtual assistant on Microsoft Office that popped up at the worst times, in fact any time it would pop up would be a worst time, and was universally hated by all. Clippy was like a bad rash, you hated it and never wanted to see it ever again.
Clippy's main purpose was to assist and be helpful, however it did the opposite and was seen as an eyesore. Practically anyone using Microsoft Word would turn off Clippy as the first thing they did before they started typing. There was a lot of criticism and backlash towards Microsoft because of Clippy, and soon the software giant turned it off by default since Office XP, and killed it off eventually in Office 2007.
Clippy was introduced in Microsoft Office 97 for Windows and Office 98 for Mac as a part of Microsoft Agent technology which was intended to help users and give them suggestions on their writing and such. Eventually, Clippy was removed completely following the release of Microsoft Office 2007 (Office 2008 for Macs).
Clippy is dead as disco, remembered mockingly in various spoofs.
- Clippy wasn't the only virtual assistant, as there was Bosgrove the Butler, Genie, Kairu the Dolphin, Max the Mac exclusive assistant, Merlin the Wizard, Peedy the Parrot, and Robby the Robot
- Even Microsoft employees hated Clippy
