Summary

DO NOT WANT is the general phrase used by Internet denizens to express distaste or horror at an image, idea, or video that is made known to them, as well as the wish to have never seen it in the first place.

Origins

The phrase originated from English subtitles of a Chinese bootleg version of Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith also known as Star war, the backstroke of the west, that was translated into Chinese, then back into English. The phrase itself appeared during one of the movie's final scenes, where Darth Vader cries "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" in reaction to news of the death of his love.

Current status

It has spread like wildfire across the Internet and is part of the standard lingo.

Facts

  • Its most common variation is DO WANT, which implies the opposite: that the image, idea or video is pleasing, and they desire for it to become reality, whether it is possible or otherwise.
