A denial of service (DoS) or the more advanced distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is an attack on a computer system with the intent to prevent others from accessing the affected system. This can be done in a number of ways, with various malicious software packages. The most common method is to overwhelm the target machine or network with garbage traffic in order to force it to reset, slow down, or otherwise fail.

Common usage

Most often, webservers or computer networks are attacked via denial of service to disrupt their functionality. In some cases this is done for the lulz and in other cases to make a point, such as the attacks related to Chanology or retaliatory attacks tied to WikiLeaks supporters.

Example Sentences

  • 4chan tried to DDoS Bank of America and a bunch of them got V&.
  • Script kiddies are DDoSing our IRC server.
