Summary

Dwarf Fortress is a freeware video game that takes place in a fantasy setting, with the player controlling a band of dwarves in an attempt to create a fortress. Dwarf Fortress is known for its ASCII style graphics and the awkward UI. Due to its complexity and extremely steep learning curve, this game is slow to gain popularity on the internet.

Modes

There is currently three Modes. Each taking place in a similarly generated world, but with drastically different game play.

Dwarf Fortress Mode

In this mode, the player sets out with some dwarves and supplies and must build a self-sustaining Fortress.

Adventurer Mode

Taking the role of a single Human, Elf, or Dwarf, the player is challenged to survive while completing tasks.

Legends Mode

This mode is less of a game, and more of a way to view a world's myths, lore, and history

Origins

It is the successor of Slaves to Armok: God of Blood, a rpg, by Bay 12 games. The 3D graphics were omitted, being replaced by a text user interface.

Current status

The game is under constant development with the newest version, 0.31.25, released on March 28, 2011. There are many mods available.

Images

A "bug" in an earlier version cause the Carp and other large fish to be extremely dangerous to dwarves.
