Summary
Ego searching (also referred to as ego surfing or Googling yourself)) is an act of unwarranted self-importance where one searches themselves up via a search engine, typically Google. Normally, those that do search themselves on the internet usually do it in the intent to see if they'll show up as the first result or if they're e-famous (which they're not). Ego searching can consist of searching ones first name, full name, or the username to their DeviantArt or YouTube account, hopelessly believing that people care about them and that they're important. It an also be used when people who are too paranoid or insecure searches their name to see what others have said about them.
Origins
The term ego surf was coined in 1995 by Sean Carton. With the inception of search engines, the act of searching ones self was inevitable. Ever since search engines became mainstream and soon became the biggest tool of the internet, ego searching has commonly been a pastime of a bored internet denizen (or one that has way too much time on their hands).
Current status
As long as search engines exist, people Googling themselves will never cease to stop. In fact, according to a 2007 article by PewInternet, "A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project has found that 47% of American adult internet users have undertaken a vanity search in Google or another search engine."
