Summary
Facepalm is like headdesk, but sometimes a desk isn't readily available. Hands make good company when alone on the computer. Some moments of disillusionment calls for your hands to be applied to your face.
Facepalm can be written textually as "**facepalm**", "/facepalm", or "facepalm.jpg," and the experts can even use ASCII art. Oftentimes, an image of Captain Jean-Luc Picard or Jim Horne is used to convey the facepalm expression.

SMH
With facepalm also came alternatives. SMH (an acronym for shaking my head) is the black people version of facepalm. It's mainly used by black and urban youth (aka wiggers and other people who wish they were black) whenever they come across something they view as stupid or unacceptable. While the term has existed since the early 2000s, it saw a huge amount of usage towards the end of the 2000s and now is as common to among black people as lol is used when even if the user isn't laughing at all. Doing a Twitter search on it will reveal all sorts of results.
