Summary

A fandom is a group of people who have decided to take their love of something to the next level- absolute obsession. The 'something' in question is usually something along the lines of a book, television show, or film, though actors and web personalities have also fallen victim to the crazed eyes of fangirls and fanbois.

While fandom at large can be seen as its own dynamic community, smaller fandom groups are where the "action" happens. Fandom communities are centered around the worship of characters from their respective favorite media sources. Found upon DeviantArt, Fanfiction.net, and free-hosted forums, people within these communities grasp onto every plot thread (real and imagined) and character relationship (real and imagined) that they can find. Their lives are literally devoted to speculation upon a single film, book, or show.

Of course, when people are pouring their entire existences into a pile of minutiae, drama happens. When the people in question are primarily teen girls and lonely women, this drama sprouts limbs and becomes a sentient beast. The Fandom landscape is a volatile thing, constantly changing as fandoms collide and fangirls flounce from forum to forum. Literal hatred exists between groups of people within the same fandom because they have different "one true pairings". For the drama connoisseur, fandom is like a treasure chest of fine wine, though it is to be approached with extreme caution.

Origins

While fandom has likely been around for hundreds of years, it was popularized by the Internet.

Current status

Fandom will be kickin' as long as the world has obsessive people.

Facts

  • Fandom has formed an incredibly complex dialect only decipherable by teens and middle-aged women.
  • Popular fandoms include, but are by no means limited to, Harry Potter, Twilight, Doctor Who, and Naruto.
  • People in fandoms consider caffeine to be a hard drug, and they reference it constantly to look cool. Lol.
