Have you ever written about what it would be like if Ash, Brock, and Misty went to Hogwarts? Or if Naruto dated Sasuke? Or if Sora had a harem with Ash, Sasuke, and your KH fan character? All filled with off-characterization, nonsense plots, and mangled English? If so, you probably have written fanfiction! So have hundreds of thousands of other people, and Fanfiction.net collects and rates these millions of non-canon stories based on franchises. Though don't fraught if your fanfiction is terrible, so are those other people's and thousands of people read those! Good thing there is no quality control on FF.net!

The NC-17-cide

Though there is apparently a smut control. In 2002, FF.net began banning and removing fanfiction that was rated NC-17 to accommodate advertisers. The NC-17 were predictably the most popular fanfictions on the site. Immediately, many NC-17 FF authors and readers began leaving the site in fury so they could have their smut. Most moved to AdultFanFiction.net, while others brought their fanfiction down to a "Mature" (PG-13) rating for their stories. Despite the exodus, FF.net is still extremely popular.

Origins

Fan fiction is Older Than Steam. It has been argued that the New Testament was fan fiction of the Old Testament. But the website itself was founded in late 1998 to host Buffy the Vampire Slayer and X-Files fanfic.

Current status

Fanfiction.net is arguably thriving more than ever nowadays, though it got rid of most of the smut so not much really remains beside boring softcore.
