Summary
Final Fantasy is a Japanese RPG series known for being a hub of weeboo culture. Having 14 games in it's main series, and many spin-offs, the Final Fantasy series was once known as the titan of RPG games, having been the RPG series innovator and forerunner. But it all began to go downhill at certain point.
Final Fantasy Games
Final Fantasy VII
This can be blamed on Final Fantasy 7, which is the most familiar game of the series to audiences, and is arguably the game that caused the RPG series to slip. Most often called "The game that sold the PS1", it has a large stake in modern anime and weeboo culture. This is because FFVII is full of angst, archetypes, and tropes that began sprouting in Japanese animes and games after it's release. It also began Square Enix now common policy of "Graphics sell, worry about gameplay after release". FFVII itself was not a terrible game, but it was a precursor as to what to expect in future games, mainly poor stories.
Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XI was Square's MMO that failed as an MMO due to a multitude of reasons. Mainly due to boring fetch quests, awful grinding, and the need to build a team with other people for hours but only wind up fighting one monster.
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII is the culmination of all the bad ideas Square Enix has had over the years. No open ended world until 20 hours in? Check. Poor exploration once you get the open world? Check. Endless hallways? Check. "High paced gameplay" that is so fast that the games has to play it for you? Check. Long amounts of tedious grinding? Check. Terrible characterization, convoluted plot that you have read in the codex, and massive plot holes? Check. Check. Check.
FFXIII is known as the most disappointing game in the series, and is the point where most people drop off. Most don't even finish the game, due to the all rounding awfulness of it all. FFXIII is meant to launch a new series known as Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy, which all takes place in the FFXIII universe. This, and FFXIV put in Square Enix in a place of disarray.
Final Fantasy XIV
FFXIV, or the game that broke the camel's back, is Sqaure Enix's second MMO. As an MMO, it had needlessly complicated menus, making buying and trading impossible, to many vendors that made finding the one item you need impossible, large terrains of nothing with no jump feature, long crafting and grinding times, a Chinese monopoly on Real Money Trading, and broken everything. It was so bad, that Gamespot gave it a 4.0 Surprising, as Gamespot hardly rates a game lower than a 7. More reviews rated it alarmingly low, which caused the game's inevitable flop. It flopped so, horribly, that it put Square Enix in a state of financial ruin, cutting their stock shares in half over two years.
Due to all this bad press, Square Enix claimed the game needed to be reviewed three to four weeks after it's release. The following weeks wound up fixing little of anything. People left in droves to play WoW but Square Enix gave everyone a free month of play. People still left. FFXIV is now it's crowning jewel of failure.
Origins
Sqaure was in the Japanese game market in the mid 1980's with simple, racing and RPG games. Having suffered fincial woes, Hironobu Sakaguchi created the RPG Final Fantasy, feeling as if this would his last game. FF reversed Sqaure's fortune and Final Fantasy then became a staple RPG series for Square.
Current status
After the terrible release of both FFXIII and FFXIV, the series looks like it is on it's final legs for future titles are all spin-offs of FFXIII stories.
