Friend zone
Guy likes girl. Girl does not. Guy mistakenly believes that befriending the girl will lead to a relationship. Guy fails to note the emphasis tag on mistakenly.
Common usage
Essentially, the Friend Zone is a figurative place that a man (it's mostly men) enters when they like a girl that only considers them a friend. Often, the guy (who will be henceforth referred to as Prima) will just go about their daily life treating the girl like a friend lest she discover his affections, whereas the girl (Secunda) will just be totally oblivious to the fact that Prima likes her and assume he's just a really Nice Guy. Prima will be torn by the fact that he sees this girl every day but she doesn't and won't return his affections that she has no knowledge of, and Secunda just treats him like a good friend or - and this is the death knell for Prima's chances - a brother.
The root cause of this is often a certain shyness or lack of confidence. When a guy approaches a girl he likes and wants to ask her out, the most straightforward way (and one that has been proven to be successful by everyone who has ever been on a date) is to ask the girl out, with no pretense involved. But most guys who end up in the Friend Zone were trying to be nice to the girl they had a crush on in an attempt to get her to return his affections, and hope that it would make her uncontrollably fall in love with him. The logic here is that girls totally end up with the lead actor in TV shows, regardless of prior relationships, or that girls always say they want nice guys so kindness must be sexually attractive to them.
The real root cause is that Prima is approaching it the way he'd like women to approach him/thinks women are normally approached/is too nervous to just straight out ask for a date. Guys in the friend zone are normally unattractive but friendly people who don't have the qualities that the girl is looking for, like confidence or looks. The kinds of guys in the Friend Zone are typically awkward nerds and varieties of nerds or anyone who hasn't had much experience with a girl before, however, it can happen to anyone in many cases if they're not careful.
The Friend Zone is a common topic in any kind of dating discussion on the internet thanks to the amount of awkward people who participate in these sorts of things, and they're emotional experience with it. There's two ways out of the Friend Zone, which are 1) Move on and learn from it or 2) make the girl your girlfriend. Number 1 is hard, number 2 is often impossible. Guys tend to stay in the Friend Zone for just about forever before finally getting out, and after that, many of them end up cynical and misogynistic about girls and complain about how they think they only like bad boys.
