Fursona

A character that a furry either identifies with or assumes the role of during furry roleplay.
If a person uses an avatar featuring a poorly drawn fox, messages you in an IRC chatroom brushing their tail against your crotch as a prelude to copulation, or goes into great detail about some animal which you really don't give a damn about, it is a sign that said individual not only is a furry, but has a fursona. A fursona is a personal avatar which a furry will roleplay as around other furries (as well as around normal folk, much to their dismay). While oftentimes a fursona will stay just that, some tend to take it a bit more seriously, treating their fursona as the true manifestation of themselves. So say you've got a 300 pound teenage boy - he may feel that, in spirit if not in body, he is a hot little vixen with disproportionately sized breasts and a perfect hourglass figure. You following me?
A furry may draw (or commission, if they're not particularly gifted) their fursona in many different compromising positions in order to sate whichever fetishes they may have. This is the beauty of the fursona; a furry can simply claim that their fursona is nothing more than a character which they can slap into porn images while deep down inside they can feel truly happy because they know that, within their heart, that it really is them that's getting eaten by a foxtaur.
Common usage
As being a portmanteau of 'furry' and 'persona' would suggest, fursona is most often used when divulging information about the character which a furry likes to play. This word tends to appear a lot when furries are discussing various different aspects of their characters amongst themselves, such as the species their fursona is, sex, markings and any other characteristics which may stand out (and it must be emphasized that 'standing out' in this context tends to have some very weird connotations).
