Summary

Gabe Newell (sometimes referred to as "gaben", "chubby", "fat" or "obese") is the guy who is behind famous games such as Half-Life and Team Fortress 2. Ever since Half-Life was released in 1998, Gabe Newell has been super-successful, along with his company and the food industry.

Gabe Newell created the Steam project with Half-Life's sequel's simultaneously. Steam is a program that launches games and also acts as a platform where one can purchase and download games. Steaming is also Gabe's favorite way of cooking stuff.

Because of Steam's popularity, Gabe has developed a sort of cult following of people who watch his every move and report it on internet forums and twitter. There are many image macros and memes that feature him and various injokes.

Jokes that poke fun at him

Gabe's... size is often joked about by fans and detractors alike. It's pretty obvious that Gabe is a large dude. Due to this, many, many Photoshopped images and drawings are created depicting him eating. Or being wasted on marijuana, which of course, leads to eating. A lot of these focus on the fact that Episode 3 is not out yet, because he's fat. A common theory involves that every time someone calls Gabe fat, then Episode 3 will be delayed some more. Another one claims that Gabe literally ate the third episode, and it is never going to be released.

Emails

Gabe Newell replies to many of the emails that get sent to him, with some screencaps available to view in the gallery here. He usually goes along with jokes. At one point, someone sent him an animated .gif of a man resembling Gabe Newell doing nasty things to a big raccoon plush, asking if the man was Newell. Gabe Newell replied "No, but I need to have a chat with my raccoon." He continued making jokes ever since, with gems such as the hats in Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead 2.

Origins

Born in 1962, Gabe dropped out of Harvard and worked in Microsoft. He was inspired by id Software's Quake, which was created by Michael Abrash. He left Microsoft as Abrash had done. From there, they developed Half-Life using the millions of dollars they had made from working at Microsoft and began what is now Valve Corporation.

Rise to fame

1998's Half-Life is Valve's debut product, where you play as Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist. The game has had 9.3 million copies had been sold by 2008, and over 50 "Game of the Year" awards. Its hugely positive reception pushed Valve to popularity, and Gabe himself as well.

Current status

The punching bag of the gaming community.
