Summary
Tom MacMaster, an American who goes to a grad school in Scotland, started a Blogspot account named "Gay Girl in Damascus" and pretended to be Amina Abdallah Araf al Omari, a lesbian Syrian woman.
The blog falsely reported the fictitious persona as kidnapped, causing real life bloggers and the US State Department to look for her.
Origins
The Facebook photos came from Jelena Lecic, a British woman. Lecic was unaware that her photos were being used. Suspicions came to light when the Briton realized that her photos were on there!
And so the hoax exposed, MacMaster admitted all. Real Syrian gays were oh-so-thrilled that MacMaster's stunt took away from their real troubles, caused the Assad regime to focus its attention on them, and gave the Assad regime ammunition to say "dirty foreigners are lying about Syria!"
Current status
The blog is now totally empty
Facts
- Paula Brooks, the editor of the lesbian site Lez Get Real, criticized MacMaster for what he did... Then "Brooks" revealed herself as Bill Graber, a straight man
