A classic and well-loved shock site.

Summary

Often used to shock or horrify your enemies on the web, Goatse was one of the first shock sites and one of the first most people were exposed to in the wild west of the World Wide Web. Originally a simple page with an infamous image entitled "hello.jpg", which was a photo of a nude man bent over, his fingers stretching his butt wide open, and his junk hanging below. This page was titled Receiver. There were three other sections to the site, the Giver, which featured a Photoshopped image of another nude man reclining, with a tremendous member resting on his body. It was implied that this was used to stretch the Receiver's behind parts. The other sections included contrib which showcased user-submitted homages to hello.jpg, and a feedback page with various emails sent to the webmaster.

Later during the site's existence the following disclaimer was added below hello.jpg:

One well-noted feature of hello.jpg is that the man appears to be wearing a wedding band. Any and all tributes to goatse must include this detail.

Origins

hello.jpg was originally named gap3.jpg and was contained in a Zip file entitled gap.zip, which contained 39 other images featuring anal stretching with hands and very large toys. The images were allegedly located by users at Stile Project.

It has been discovered that the "Goatse man" as many know him is Kirk Johnson, who regularly posted images of his flexible newsgroups

Current status

On January 11, 2004, Rhonda Clarke, a resident of the tiny Australian pseudocolony known as Christmas Island submitted a formal complaint to the Christmas Island Internet Administration (CIIA). Only three days later, the domain was suspended pending review. Although the exact details are unknown, the registrant may simply have failed to respond, leading to Goatse.cx being automatically permabanned 60 days later (March 12, 2004).

Attempts were made several times to auction off the domain, and it currently proclaims "Goatse.cx Mail is coming Get YourName@goatse.cx!" and apparently has done so since June of 2010.
