Summary
Google Plus is Google's social network designed to take away Facebook's domination in the social networking field.
Right now it's in field testing, so you can only get in by invitation, but if you post your email anywhere, you'll get spammed up the arse with junk offers and such.
The early population of Google Plus is primarily Google employees and their immediate friends and families due to Google tying employee bonuses to the success of the service.
Origins
Google Plus went public on June 29, 2011, with limited invites. There is still a lot of confusion about how to invite friends and how to utilize those invites.
Google's had some experience in social networking; it already operates Orkut, a social networking service popular in Brazil and India.
