Grass Mud Horse
A made-up animal that became a big meme in China
- Date Discovered: 2009
- Discovered On: Baidu Baike
The government of China enacted some keyword filters to block profanity. In 2009 some enterprising Chinese kids decided to vandalize Baidu Baike, the Chinese Wikipedia, and write articles about fictional animals with names made up of profanities. The Grass Mud Horse is the most well known of them, and it became immensely popular in China. You can buy Grass Mud Horse plushes (the sellers call them "alpacas" so the government doesn't lose face, but we all know they are grass mud horses :) )
One celebrity, an artist named Ai Weiwei, even took a photo of himself only wearing a Grass Mud Horse plush in a strategic place.
The Chinese government still hates it. The Chinese still love it.
