Summary
Hypertext Transfer Protocol is a Layer 7 networking protocol which operates on a request-response basis. So, to put it in layman's terms, it is the crap that is flushed through the series of tubes to and from your computer while you're looking at 4chan or pictures of people in compromising positions.
Origins
HTTP 0.9 was first documented in 1991. Nowadays HTTP 1.1 is in widespread use, which was defined in 1999. See RFC 2616.
