Summary

Hudong (originally "Hoodong") is the largest Chinese online encyclopedia. While many in the west rely on Wikipedia, Chinese people use Hudong and Baidu Baike (of Baidu) fame partly because they have to). Freedom of information be damned! No capitalism allowed, no sir!

Hudong's content is all copyrighted, and it's a for profit company.

Origins

China's internet service grew rapidly beginning in the 1990s. Many people in China wanted to make money, now that Communism was curtailed by the Chinese government. Dr. Pan Haidong was one of them, and he decided to start an online editable Wiki. Traffic flow to the site is robust and heavy, and miraculously, very few accidents occur on the Chinese information superhighway.

Current status

Still up and running, and it just won't quit...just like a Nissan.

Facts

  • Hudong is in the Simplified Chinese (Standard Mandarin) language. Unlike the Chinese Wikipedia there is no script to convert characters from Mainland characters and vocabulary to Hong Kong, Singapore/Malaysia, and Taiwan characters and vocabulary.
