"Overpriced", well designed, and user friendly hardware from Apple.

Because of Apple's tendency to put a lowercase 'i' at the beginning of the names of many of their products, their handheld devices which run the iOS operating system are often collectively referred to as iDevices for simplicity's sake.

Apple started putting the 'i' on their product names with the first iMac all in one desktop computer in 1998. Apple declared the 'i' in iMac to stand for "Internet"; and the 'i' was also supposed to refer to the individual.

Common usage

The term iDevices is commonly used to generalize these iOS-running devices:

However, it can also refer to other devices that begin with 'i' but do not run iOS. This includes:

  • iPod Classic
  • iPod Shuffle
  • iPod Nano
  • iMac
  • iBook (now MacBook)

It can also extend to:

  • Apple TV
  • MacBook
  • MacBook Pro
  • MacBook Air
  • Mac Mini
  • Mac Pro
  • ServerX
