The typical reason for doing anything questionable on the internet. Most atrocities performed on the internet were, in fact, done for the lulz. The admission of performing bizarre or detestable acts 'for the lulz' is often a valid excuse on the internet, lessening or preventing punishment in most online theaters.
While the term itself surfaced in the mid-2000s, the concept has been long appreciated. Many great tyrants, warlords and deities of centuries past have been motivated to create nations, destroy peoples and perform destructive miracles; based on boredom, science and lack of other decent entertainment.
Common usage
Usually invoked after doing something of abnormality online. This includes Trolling of all varieties, creating/posting shock material, starting wars, ending wars, nut-shots, cooking, changing oil, breaking 2, shooping da whoop, taking down ED, having a MySpace page, sockpuppeting your ex, going to church, having sex, urinating in public, being Awesome, pooping other people's pants, buying a dog, going to Davids Farm, dropping Dox, fapping and having dun goofed.

When he finally forced Egypt to let Moses and his slave buddies go, God accidentally smote Moses' GPS forcing him to lead his people through the desert for 40 years. And God had done it for the lulz, and saw that it was good.
