Israel
A country in the Middle East that has become a technology haven.
Summary
Israel is a country in the Middle East with a contentious political history and a variety of ethnic groups. It is the world's only Jewish-established state. While many of its Jewish populations are from central Europe, it also has indigenous Middle Eastern Jewish populations and Jews from southern Europe and Ethiopia. Israel also has non-Jewish Arab populations. The official languages are Hebrew and Arabic, and English is widely understood.
Israel's technology industry took off, and as a result ICQ was developed there. Bezeq (the phone company) and Hot (the cable company) provide internet services to Israel.
Origins
What is now Israel was originally part of the British Mandate of Palestine. During and after World War II, many Jewish people who had been persecuted came to Israel. The local Arab populations were not happy, and the British saw a political crisis happening and withdrew in 1947. The State of Israel was declared in 1948.
