A classic case of "haters make me famous" that popularized a horrible song that isn't about the cold weather in Detroit

Summary

The internet is often a cruel and brutally honest critic of the horribly talentless. Indeed, many videos such as failed American Idol or America's Got Talent contestants whose singing are so bad that not even Auto-Tune could fix it often go viral with millions of hits. Before Rebecca Black's atrocious single "Friday" went viral, there was It's So Cold in the D. Although the song didn't even reach a fraction of the hits Friday received, it became an internet sensation due to how horrible it was and some argue that it's the funniest low budget music video ever made.

It’s So Cold in the D (the D standing for Detroit) is an amateur music video rapped and sung by wannabe emcee, T-Baby (real name, LaTonya Myles), which is about the artist's friends who died and how difficult life in Detroit is. The video starts off with man on the floor dead (most likely supposed to represent Mason Graham, whom the song was dedicated to) while T-Baby and her crew walk around the ghettos of Detroit, with a slide show of her friends and family who passed away. The song, as hilariously bad as it is, is further proof that Rap shouldn't be classified as a music genre. The music video is especially notable for its off-beat and badly written lyrics that aren't clear which has people who listen have very little clue on what she's rapping about, constant amateur mistakes, the fact that it can easily get stuck in one's head, and overall poor quality. Surprisingly, T-Baby and her back-up singer(s) didn't utilize the use of Auto-Tune, though that is most likely because they couldn't afford it, not that it would make the song any better.

Origins

The video was uploaded in January 3, 2008 on T-Baby's YouTube account, pwltf, which is the only video uploaded on that account as well as being perhaps the only rap video she ever made. The song was originally made to send her condolences to her fallen friends, most notably her friend Mason Graham who died in 2006. It's quite obvious that the video was made on a very low budget perhaps paid for by food stamps, as if it were for some school project of such.

In addition to rapping and singing as her many talents, T-Baby is also a lyricist and in her own words, she's a "pro at everything" she does. T-Baby also describes herself, in her own words, as "SWEET KINDHEARTED LOVING AND I HAVE ALOT OF RESPCET,I DONT PLAY NO GAMES I JUST DO MY THANG AND KEEP IT REAL I DONT DO THEM JOKES,IM A REAL WOMAN I DONT PLAY GAMES I TAKES CARE OF MY BUSINESS AND DO WHAT I GOT TO DO TO GET WHERE IM TRYNA GET TO MY DREAMS IS MAKEN IT BIG AND THATS WHAT IM GONE DO".

In response to people believing the song was made as a joke, T-Baby stated in an interview with Metromix:

Rise to fame

The video didn't receive much attention until later on the year that it was uploaded, as many who stumbled upon the song by accident found the video so bad that it was funny and shared it through YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook as social networking brought the song into the spotlight. Soon, as with any other viral video, people on YouTube began uploading their reaction videos responding to the song as well as parodies (most of which were all bad and unfunny) giving the original video an even bigger boost in popularity. T-Baby began gaining fame on the internet and was, in a way, a local celebrity but for all the bad reasons.

As her 15 minutes began to follow through, T-Baby received interviews and appeared as a guest on WKQL 95.5 FM, a commerical pop radio station located in Detroit, where she performed her song that brought her attention live. Despite that her live performance was still horrible and off-key, she did show a marginal level of improvement.

In October 26, 2009, T-Baby made a blog post on her MySpace music page that she would have her own perfume line. She posted "HEY WATZUP EVERYBODY IM ADVERTISEN IN MY OWN PERFUME AND IT WILL BE IN MARKETS REAL SOON SO BE LOOKEN OUT I LOVE ALL OF MY FANS EVEN THE HATERS I KEEPS IT SUPERSEXY 100 ALL THE TIME." The perfume never made it to production, which would been a complete disaster knowing that it wouldn't sell and probably leave her bankrupt.

T-Baby also posted another blog post in December 28, 2009 that she was going to have her own talk show "ON CHANNEL 20 REGULAR TV AND ON CHANNEL 33ON CABLE TUNE" and her show was going to be titled "T-Baby Real Talk". The current status of the show is unknown.

Current status

After the year 2008 ended, T-Baby's internet popularity began to fade away. She still remained a known local rapper in her area, though not one people were actually fond of. T-Baby still did concerts for her fans (which mostly consisted of friends and family attending reluctantly), however most people attended just for the sake of laughing at her. She has also stated in an interview by The Detroit News in late 2008 that she'll plan to further her career with her first album “The Ride or Die Chick”. So far, she has never released the album and either wised up and completely abandoned the project, finally realizing how horrible she is, or she's incredibly lazy and is on a never-ending hiatus.

As the song was completely forgotten as time went on, it's notability was revived when it was featured on the new season of the resurrected show, Beavis and Butt-head, in the episode "Holy Cornholio" during one of their infamous music critiques which was first aired in November 10, 2011. In the little segment, Butt-head commented, "Is this Real Housewives of Detroit?" and "This is hard to dance to.... something's off." noting how off track the lyrics are to the beat while Beavis stated "I'm lost".

T-Baby remains as an unsigned artist, though what else you were expecting?

T-Baby never posted the official lyrics to her song, so it comes to no surprise that the few (two people on YouTube) who posted the lyrics to the song are a little inaccurate given that the lyrics were hard to understand.
