Summary
Chick Tracts are a series of Protestant Christian evangelizing comic strips by American artist Jack T. Chick and several of his staff members.
The infamous "Chick Tracts" actually precede the Internet as we know it. His comics attacked everything outside his faith of choice: Catholics, Muslims, neopagans, homosexuals, and many aspects of both popular culture and nerd culture, though the Roman Catholic Church received the vast majority of his rage, proposing conspiracies so improbable and nutty, they make many modern-day conspiracy theorists seem sane.
Origins
The first Chick tracts were published in the 1960s. Many of the really memorable ones were published in the 1970s, while the Internet was still primarily used by the government.
Rise to fame
Inevitably, word got out about them, causing rage from all fronts, and even other Protestant religious groups were shocked at just how crazy this guy was. To this day he remains reviled by most decent religious folk of all faiths as a bigot and an overzealous idiot.
When the first Chick tracts made it onto the Internet, parodies inevitably began to spring up, some of which can be seen here.
Current status
His comics are still being laughed at and/or parodied on the Internet, and he is a pariah to all but the most heavily fundamentalist Protestant organizations.
Facts
- Jack Chick got his inspiration from propaganda tracts handed out by Communists in China
- Chick is a believer in "King James" only - Many Anglophone Protestant Christians believe that the King James English translation is the only true English translation of the Bible, and the other translations are phonies
- Some comics have art from Fred Carter, an African American man - His art is more detailed, while Chick's is more cartoony
- A recurring element in Chick comics is "Fang," a mean-looking dog who appears in many strips as a background element
