If cells are the basic building block of life, lol is the basic building block of the internet. It's present in every conversation and is arguably the reason for the internet in the first place. Or at least for the websites worth visiting.

LOL stands for laughing out loud, but it is not necessary to actually find something funny in order to use it.

Common usage

Prima: What do you call a bear with no teeth?
Secunda: idk what
Prima: A gummy bear!!!!!
Secunda: OMG LOL

Secunda finds Prima's bad joke to be funny

Prima: I saw you at the mall Secunda: lol

Secunda does not care about Prima's babbling and is being as unproductive to the conversation as possible. See also: oic

Prima: Hey wanna go to the movies with me? Secunda: lol

In this example, secunda is derisively rejecting Prima

LOL has been used so much it is usually understood to not even mean the user is laughing. To show you are actually laughing, try capitalizing the whole thing (LOL), adding length (loooool, lolololol), or changing it to IRLOL (in real life laughing out loud).

lol can also be a verb in itself with prefixes and suffixes. lol'ing is a common expression for laughing out loud.

Additionally, may variations of lol have emerged such as lollerskates, lollercaust, rofl, lmao, etc.
