Summary

Most of the people in the dark corners of the internet have diagnosed themselves with Asperger's Syndrome for attention. Some people take this a step further and call themselves Love Shy. Coined in the '80's by disgraced professor Brian Gilmartin, the term describes those who are so socially crippled that they can't talk to women without soiling themselves. Today "love shy" has spread across the internet, spawning numerous forums dedicated to pseudocide and women-hating. The online resources available for love-shys range from articles on how to pick up women through dating sites to circlejerks where those who suffer from the affliction reassure themselves that they do not need women to live fulfilling lives. Similarly, self-proclaimed love-shies have a wide range of reactions towards the disorder. While some dedicate their time to self-improvement and try to lift themselves from their romantic rut, others wallow in hopelessness and make little effort to gain confidence.

Origins

In 1987, Dr. Brian Gilmartin interviewed 300 extremely shy men, adult virgins, about their hopes, dreams, fears, and aspirations. Although Social Anxiety Disorder, shyness, social phobias, depression, Asperger's syndrome, autism, and a whole slew of other psychological conditions are recognized and treatable, Dr. Gilmartin thought up a new term for their crippling anxiety: Love-shyness.

Gilmartin suggested that none of the love-shies' problems were their fault; their virginity was caused by society, mom and dad, football, genetics, and astrology. Gilmartin denied that actually talking to people and getting counseling would help. Instead of a logical and sane path to not failing at life, he suggested that football be outlawed because football teams were guerrilla training camps for bullies, that shy people should get helper animals like blind people, that sex selection by aborting male fetuses could help shy men cope with fatherhood by not having to raise boys, and that shy people should become militant activists and picket with signs that literally described them as cowards. Years later, the term grabbed hold online, and the love shy movement was formed.

Current status

The movement is still active.
