MMORPG
A massively multiplayer online role playing game.
Summary
A Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG, is an Internet-based video game where users act in parties and groups to accomplish objectives and quests. Players assume control of their character and enter an entire online world with thousands of other users from all over the planet.
Most of today's MMORPGs are based off of EverQuest's format, including WoW. The format of EQ usually includes quest-based adventures where one has to kill ten rats or group up in dungeons.
The popularity of MMORPGs has been steadily on the rise since Blizzard released the first super-successful MMORPG, World of Warcraft, in 2004. Since Warcraft's inception, games have sprung up left and right, feeding on the popularity and laying the foundation to solidify MMORPGs from relative obscurity to super huge mega hit.
Origins
The first fully graphical multi-user RPG was Neverwinter Nights, which was delivered through America Online in 1991 and swooned over by AOL President, Steve Case. This was the very first concept of an MMORPG. MMORPGs as defined today began with Meridian 59 in 1996. This was the first of its kind, and while not nearly as technical as newer games, it still set the point from whence the MMORPG genre grew.
Current status
Growing with new users every day.
Facts
- Playing MMORPGs generally reduces one from a social butterfly to a shut-in.
- Many MMORPGs cost about $15 a month because of server costs.
- Other MMORPGs are usually free-to-play, with a cash shop of optional items to purchase for IRL money.
- Many East Asians play MMORPGs at internet cafes, causing them to be withdrawn from their families (hence the Jia Junpeng meme)

Spend too much time at the internet cafe playing MMORPGs, and your family will make posts on internet forums begging you to come home to dinner! |
