Origins

The Swahili phrase "Mek ma nday" in Kenya is a corruption of the popular phrase "Make My Day!" from the Hollywood film "Dirty Harry." Originally "Mek ma nday" had connotations of power, but eventually the word instead referred to wannabes who were trying to imitate Harry Callahan, the character in "Dirty Harry."

The funk band "Just A Band" released a music video. The main character, Makmende, is a superhero based on the Kenyan phrase. Kenyans decided to photoshop Makmende's image into magazine covers and other pictures.
