Summary

Marilyn Manson is a tall, awkward-looking American guy in makeup who wanders around Hollywood and is worshipped by goth kids who take him far more seriously than he does. Sometimes he is pretty awesome. Other times, not so much. Often blamed for school shootings.

Internet Shenanigans

While Marilyn Manson prefers to do his trolling IRL, his fandom is extremely similar to that of Nine Inch Nails and Tool. And when ridiculous fans and the Internet collide, hilarity happens.

The Official BBS

Between the late 90s and 2002, the official Marilyn Manson site's forums were inexplicably called a BBS, and resembled the unholy spawn of 4chan and DeviantArt. They were usually moderated by some libertarian known as Stark23x, who suffered from a serious banhammer addiction, and caused a lot of butthurt.

Notable users included "Gia", who fled when pictures of her performing fellatio were discovered. Predictably, she returned, along with her fan site for the keyboard player.

Dead God

At some point in 2002 or 2003, a demo recorded by producer/guitarist/bassist in 2000 was stolen, surfaced online and was mistaken for demos from the upcoming The Golden Age Of Grotesque album. To this day, the five songs can be found on file-sharing networks as "rare" demos, along with other not-Marilyn Manson recordings such as a god-awful acoustic version of Nine Inch Nails' "Terrible Lie" (also credited to Tool, usually claimed to be a demo from 1988, before any of these bands had released anything).

MansonUSA

Most bands have one or two really good fan sites, chock-full of lyrics, guitar tabs, interviews, pictures, and anything interested parties could want. For Marilyn Manson, MansonUSA.com was the main fan site, which fell apart in a mess of e-drama.

As the most notable fan site, MansonUSA was in contact with Marilyn Manson's management. While this resulted in some good, in-depth interviews, it also created serious brown-nosing on the forums. In 2007 and 2009, as Marilyn Manson's most recent albums approached release, extreme anti-piracy rules were put into place, ensuring that the banhammer would fall on anyone who even mentioned song titles that had not been "officially" released (This policy was made even more absurd by the "general music" board's status as a great place to pirate music by anyone other than Marilyn Manson). Eventually, MansonUSA.com imploded under the pressure and nothing of value was lost.

Origins

Brian Warner was born in 1969, wrote bad poetry in high school like every other goth kid, and started doing open mic nights. Then he started a band, The Spooky Kids, which impressed Trent Reznor at some point. Trent signed him to his vanity label, Nothing Records, and his cover of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" marked the beginning of his reign of terror over suburban America until 9/11 made it hard to be scared by a guy in black lipstick and a thong.

Rise to fame

Gained a cult following of goths in Florida playing shows and releasing demo tapes as Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids, got signed to Trent Reznor's vanity label. Got a hit single covering the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)", then made Christians and concerned parents panic with his Reznor-produced album, Antichrist Superstar. In 1998, he released his best album, Mechanical Animals, inspired heavily by David Bowie and cocaine. The tour was cut short by the Columbine massacre, and the media blaming him for it.

Michael Moore remedied this with his Bowling For Columbine documentary, that made him less scary to soccer moms, and he's now basically another Alice Cooper - generally a silly, fun, cool guy who pretends it's always Halloween. The goths still take him far more seriously than he ever did.

Since then, he's released a few more albums of varying quality.

Current status

Allegedly working on a new album, but after the last two, nobody really wants to hear it. Manson also claims to be working on at least four different movies (none of which will ever come out), and put his Male Sexual Organ inside of actresses Rose McGowan and Evan Rachel Wood, burlesque star (stripper) Dita Von Teese, and porn star Stoya. He has been engaged to three of those women, married Dita, and divorced a year later.

Manson kicked awesome Swedish guitarist/bassist Tim Skold to the curb because it would be "awkward" to have him in the same band as the guy he replaced. Showing up to the Scream Awards, sexually harassing Alison Brie (Community, Mad Men) and Lady Gaga.
