Summary

This former ruler of Libya decided to cut Libya's internet. He ruled Libya for 42 years, which is one of the longest spans of power in modern history. He also had a distinctive way of dressing himself.

Rise to fame

He was originally instituted as ruler of Libya on September 1, 1969

Current status

He's no longer a factor. He died after sustaining bullet wounds on October 20, 2011, but not before being paraded around Sirte, Libya, in a humiliated and defeated fashion. His death marked the end of the Libyan Civil War of 2011.

Facts

• There are zillions of ways of spelling Muammar Gaddafi's name. That is because the name sounds different in Libyan Arabic (the spoken Arabic dialect in Libya) and Modern Standard Arabic (the academic and literary Arabic across the Middle East) - The name would be written the same way in either Arabic dialect, but in English it would be transcribed differently. On top of that there are multiple romanization systems of Arabic to English. So you have "Qaddafi," "Gadhafi," "Gaddafi," "Kaffafi," etc. not to mention several was of spelling "Muammar" too!
