Instead of referring simply to a guy who is nice, Nice Guy refers to a stereotype of shy, unconfident guys who are passed up by girls for stereotypical Bad Boys/jerks.

Common usage

Though you might expect it to just refer to a guy who happens to be nice, in many conversations on the internet it has connotations of being pathetic and even perhaps misogynistic. Nice Guy refers to guys who are often perfect examples of the phrase "Nice guys finish last". These are the guys who are stuck in the Friend Zone more than anyone else. Often nerds who have never had a girlfriend, Nice Guys always stick themselves with the name after their attempts to woo a lady with kindness fail, and after some quick googling discover that dating experts who get women universally say that treating a girl like a jerk is what attracts them. They immediately come to the conclusion that girls only like "Bad Boys" and the reason they can't get any women is because they're too nice.

It can't be because they're not physically attractive, or they're socially awkward, or they lack confidence/ambition or integrity, or maybe the fact that they're not truly nice and only nice to girls they like, or they lack manners, or perhaps they're terminally annoying or unfunny, or they're incredibly creepy, or boring, or overbearing, or really really socially awkward, or the girl's just plain uninterested, or the fact that they're not asking the girl out at all or even showing interest. It has to be because they're TOO NICE, and GIRLS ONLY LIKE JERKS.

The Nice Guy often finds out the hard way when the girl they like starts dating a guy who treats her like crap and complains to everyone about her boyfriend, yet stays with him. It's obvious, after all, that this means that girls are attracted to guys who treat them like crap. It can't be a thing that guys fall victim to as well, can it? Hell, it can't be a thing that girls eventually grow out of, can it? Or hey - could it be that the girl is just complaining about nothing in particular, desperate for a boyfriend, or even lying? No, of course it can't.

The Nice Guy is typically shy and inexperienced with girls, and often ends up misogynistic and bitter about women in general, or as Pick-up artists who treat women like objects going from one extreme to the other.

That said, sometimes it is actually the case where the guy who's actually nice is passed up for a total asshole, but the situation is rarely as black and white as that.
