Summary
Even though people in Japan use YouTube, they also have Nico Nico Douga, which is like YouTube but a tad more underground. Nico Nico is a bit like if the main people who ruled youtube were the YouTube Poopers, the people uploading full episodes of tv shows and the people making joke or meme videos. You have to register an account to watch Nico Nico videos normally, but there are plenty of ways around that, like this site here.
Nico Nico and 2ch share a relationship similar to those two people you know who would totally go so well together and you know they get up to a lot of stuff behind the scenes but when questioned about their relationship they say that they're "just friends". So the comments, while most of them are still stupid, are more likely to be the kind of stupid that you'd be used to seeing from 4chan, only in Japanese.

Still up and running. Because they don't have normal ads, it makes most of its money from its store and encouraging people to buy premium accounts.
Facts
- Nico Nico's comment system isn't the standard kind you're used to seeing on every single other video website. Instead, comments scroll across the video at the point where the user typed it in. Premium users can make their text massive and coloured, leading to massive red instances of "YOU'RE STUPID" in Japanese. Comments can, mercifully, be disabled.
- Every now and then, Nico Nico will livestream some kind of important live announcement about an Anime or game thing and blare an annoying alarm noise over everyone who's left it open in another tab.
- The Nico Nico equivalent of a youtube poop is a called a [MAD], which is perhaps a few IQ points better than a youtube poop.
