Nigeria
The most populous country in Africa, known for 419 in the south and religious extremism in the north
Summary
Nigeria (locally nicknamed "Naija") is the most populous country in Africa. It has three main ethnic groups (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa-Fulani) and was a colony of the United Kingdom. It is the home of some famous authors, like Chinua Achebe, and it has a vibrant oil industry. It's also known for having a large wealth gap and corruption, despite the (or because of?) all the black gold. English is the official language, but most people colloquially speak Nigerian pidgin, and people have different mother tongues according to their ethnic groups (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, etc).
Many Nigerians use internet cafes to access the web. Some Israeli satellite companies provide internet service, which is why if you trace IP addresses of Nigerian people, sometimes you get Israeli IPs. A lot of Nigerians are now beginning to access the internet from cell phones.
One internet-related thing from the south of Nigeria is the 419 scam. Other related scams (lottery scams, death threat scams, scam bids on eBay, etc) have originated from the south of Nigeria.
Origins
Many different kingdoms and empires such as the Oyo Empire and Benin Kingdom ruled in Nigeria. Nigeria was named after the Niger River. North Nigeria and South Nigeria were colonized by Great Britain in 1901. The north and south unified in 1914, and it became independent from the United Kingdom on October 1, 1960.
Current status
Still unified, scams still come out of the country, oil still flowing
Facts
- You may see, in online communications from Nigerians, "OOOOO" at the end of their sentences. That's the West African internet way of putting emphasis on sentences, like "!!!!!!!!" in North America, Europe, and Oceania
