Summary

Orkut, a social networking service, was Google's answer to Friendster - However it never caught on too well in the United States.

But it did catch on very well with people from Brazil and India - So well that Google moved Orkut's management down to Brazil.

Origins

Google asked Friendster if it wanted to be purchased by Google. Friendster refused, so Google asked Orkut Büyükkökten to develop something similar.

Originally Orkut's userbase was as American as apple pie. Then Brazilians came. And more and more Brazilians came to Orkut. They spoke Portuguese, a language that most Americans do not understand, as most Americans are native English speakers and do not learn Portuguese.

Americans decided to use MySpace and Friendster instead. But Brazilians kept flocking to Orkut. Google moved Orkut management to Brazil. People from India joined the Orkut party too.

Current status

Orkut continues to enjoy popularity from people in Brazil and India. Estonians like the site too.

In India, around 2010 Facebook began beating Orkut in terms of overall popularity. In Brazil Orkut is still far more popular than Facebook.

Google recently debuted a new social networking service, Google Plus, while it continues to run Orkut.
