Otaku
- Date Found: Unknown
- Used By: Japanese, weeaboos
Otaku (おたく or オタク) is a Japanese term used to refer to a person who has a creepy obsession with a certain hobby, often, but not exclusively, manga or anime.
Common usage
The term otaku was originally a honorific pronoun, but is now mainly used to describe a socially awkward and creepy person who has an abnormal obsession with a particular hobby. The word is insulting and means that you do not wish to associate yourself with this person. Western weeaboos sometimes call themselves otaku, blind (or knowing about but not caring about) to the very negative connotation the word actually has (the word doesn't have the same connotation in the west, after all). It is still the nerdiest way to call oneself a nerd. There's nothing geek chic about otaku.
Example Sentences
- "I love kawaii manga and am a real otaku! Baka baka desu~"
- "He called me otaku and I suddenly felt so ashamed of myself."
