Origins

Paypal was created in 1999 as a result of a merger between Confinity and X.com, two pioneers in email payment reconciliation.

Current status

Currently owned by Ebay, they are active with, according to their website, "more than 94 million active accounts in 190 markets and 24 currencies around the world."


Facts

  • In 2010, PayPal facilitated $92 billion in total payment volume.
  • From that, their annual revenue was $3.4 billion
  • In early December 2010, PayPal was ddosed for nearly five days by Anonymous in retaliation to the suspension of Wikileaks account for TOS violations.
  • PayPal nor the US State Department specified how WikiLeaks was acting "illegally" when they cut off service.
