Adobe Photoshop is the most popular graphics editing programs currently available, as well as being the industry standard. It is also free, which means it is just right for YOU!
Photoshop has ties with other Adobe software for media editing, animation, and authoring. Adobe Photoshop is released in two editions: Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Photoshop Extended, with the Extended having extra features available. Adobe Photoshop Extended is included in all of Adobe's Creative Suite offerings except Design Standard, which includes the Adobe Photoshop edition.
These programs are ostensibly for use by the print media industries, but as it's easier to crack than the parental control on your internets, it's primarily used by 16 year old girls to make their Facebook pics resemble whatever fashion/celebrity drivel they happen to be immersed in.
Typically, Photoshop would be used for reducing red-eye, amping levels and altering hues. However, 90% of Photoshop users utilize it's nigh unlimited powers to remove hideous acne blemishes, shed hundreds of pounds, and place people into pictures with celebrities.
Origins
The concept for Photoshop was birthed in 1987 by Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan.
Current status
Currently known as Adobe Photoshop CS5, which is the 12th major release of the photoshop program.
